Summertime is right around the corner. Tis’ the season for vacations, grilling, and outdoor family gatherings. We are all for taking advantage of the season for rest and relaxation, but there is one thing you should not let fall off your to-do list. Summer is a perfect time to address any maintenance needs around your home. Here is a helpful (and simple!) summer home checklist to get you started.

Inspect for loose or damaged siding

Walk around your home and look for any pieces of siding that may be loose or blown free. Now is also a great time to power wash your siding. Power washing keeps your siding looking brand new and free from any dust, dirt, tree sap, mold, or bird droppings.

Repaint chipped exterior paint

Annual touch-ups where you have exterior paint are a great idea. It improves curb appeal by covering up faded and chipped paint. It also ensures the surfaces below the paint are protected from the elements. 

Check bricks and pointing

If you have exterior bricks on your home or a chimney, this task should definitely be on your summer checklist. You want to look for any bricks that are damaged as they age. Also, look at the mortar (called pointing) between the bricks. If this is breaking or cracking, you will want to call a contractor to see about repointing. 

Power wash and seal your deck

To get the longest life possible out of your deck, you will want to – at minimum – power wash your deck annually. Sealing or painting can be done every two years. The better you maintain your deck, the longer you will get to enjoy it. 

Clean out gutters and downspouts

Summer storms and high winds always lead to debris being dumped in your gutters. Though spring and fall are the usual seasons for doing a thorough cleaning of gutters and downspouts, it’s always a good idea to at least do a quick inspection of your gutters in the summer. 

Service your HVAC unit

If you have an outdoor heat pump or air conditioner, summer is the best time to have it serviced. Call a local HVAC contractor to make sure your unit is operating at its most efficient before the hottest days of summer!

Project time!

The mild summer months are a great time to work on some items around your home that need to be replaced, upgraded, or just something new. Consider the following:

• Replacing old windows and doors
• Roof replacements
• Chimney repairs
• Adding a deck
• Replacing siding
