When is the best time to replace your roof?
Your roof is a key component in protecting your home’s interior from the outside elements. Regular inspections and maintenance are key to making sure your roof can do its job. In some cases, a roof may be beyond repair, and a replacement is necessary. A typical asphalt shingle roof can last 20+ years depending upon the type. Once shingles reach the end of their life, you will have to take action. Hopefully, this decision will be at your convenience rather than an emergency – such as a bad roof leak. The different seasons play a huge role in roof replacements. Let’s take a look at each season and when is the best time to replace your roof.
Roof replacements during the winter months are not recommended. There are a couple of obvious reasons for this. First, snow, ice, and sleet can make installations impossible. Second, cold temperatures can also cause shingles to be brittle during installation.
Perhaps the biggest concern here is the safety of the crews working on your roof. From driving on roads that may be covered in snow to climbing onto a snow-covered roof, these safety hazards should be avoided. However, if the roof is clear, winter is a good time to have estimates done for work in the spring.
Spring is one of the best seasons for roof installation. Spring is also a good time to spot any issues that cropped up or worsened over the winter months, including leaks. Getting on the list for a spring roof replacement is also ideal as materials may cost slightly less and be more readily available because many jobs are scheduled for late summer.
Summertime is an ideal time for roof installation. The roof is dry – or quickly dries after a rain – and is easy to walk on. Early and late summer are perhaps the best times to have a roof worked on. The middle of the season can be miserable for a roofer because of extreme heat and humidity.
As the roofing season winds down, fall has some advantages as well. Cooler temperatures are easy for roofers to work in. Commonly known as “Goldilocks season,” fall is not too hot and it’s not too cold. Having a roof replaced in the fall also gives one peace of mind knowing it can make it through the winter without major issues.
